About Us

This is an ancient temple dating back to around 10th century, according to śilāśasanās (stone inscriptions) retrieved from the near-by Powai lake. The main deity of the temple was Lord Śiva, in the name of Nagajeśvara Svāmi (Lord of daughter of Himalayas).
The temple was later maintained by Simhappa, a mahāsāmant under the Silhara kings. An agricultural land (the present IIT campus) was also donated by him to the Temple. Chattrapati Śivāji, later installed Goddess Padmāvatī's murti or vigraha and from then the temple became famous after Her name.
Padmāvatī Devi, though an incarnation of Goddess Lakṣhmī, has many striking resemblances with Mumbādevi: Devi does not have a mouth and the murti or vigraha is covered with sindhūr. Also, the Devi's chālīsa mentions Her name as Pavaīsvarī, based on which the locality is known as Powai.

We are reaching out to devotees to help restore and renovate the historic murti's & the development of the temples at the Devi Padmavati Temple premises located on the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Mumbai.
Currently, there are some critical needs for the preservation and upkeep of the temples:
* The Lord Ganesha murti is over six decades old and has deteriorated over time. It is scheduled for replacement on February 1, 2025, with a new idol during a Pran Pratishtha ceremony.
* The Lord Shiva and Goddess Padmavati murti's are heritage structures that are being carefully restored with the help of experts.
* All three temple structures require urgent repairs and renovations.
* Re-construction of the Pujari's house with other facilities.
* Re-construction of the Lord Hanuman Temple located in the Hill Side Area.
In the spirit of preserving our rich heritage, we humbly request your generous contributions to fund the necessary restoration and renovation works. Your donations will help ensure that the temples remain peaceful and spiritual places for the devotees, supporting religious ceremonies & festivals.
